With the increase in the number of Fingerprint Reader devices in the market, the personal computing front dominated by Microsoft has been left behind in adopting the technology. To accommodate the new technologies Microsoft has launched a video showcasing the Modern Keyboard and Modern Mouse which are the new input devices for Window based systems. These input devices act as accessories to Microsoft’s Surface models. On first look the design of the Modern Keyboard follows the “Chiclet” design for keys which can also be found on the Apple keyboards. In addition to this the Modern Keyboard has an Aluminum frame which is not only heavy but also per Microsoft is “virtually indestructible”.
The main addition to this keyboard is the “hidden” fingerprint sensor, as unlike any other device with fingerprint sensor, doesn’t look apart from other keys. It is located between the Alt and Ctrl buttons and hence does not comes between the typing range of the users or take any extra space on the keyboard. It comes in silver or gray finish and can be operated through wire or Bluetooth 4.0 for wireless operations. It supports latest operating systems that are generally used by modern devices like Windows 10, Android and MacOS albeit it requires Bluetooth 4.0 or higher on the devices for successful connection and as per its claims, the Modern Keyboard works best with the latest Windows 10 Surface devices.
The other input device launched by Microsoft is Modern Mouse which is a far cry from its earlier models of mice. From the first look it can be surmised that Microsoft has opted for a unibody design which gives the mouse a more rounded aesthetic look and has a metallic scroll wheel which compliments the smooth and simplistic unibody design. Like its counterpart, the Modern Mouse also comes with Bluetooth 4.0 for connections but has no wired operation. Microsoft claims in its video that the Mouse gives “exceptional precision”, but does not provide with any PPI figures to support their claims. This mouse is most likely to be powered by batteries.
As per the product listing page of Microsoft Accessories, the Modern Keyboard and Modern Mouse cost falls at $130 and $50 respectively. Both these accessories are listed as “Coming Soon”, and apart from a Youtube video and product listing page there has been no further announcement about the devices. We looking forward to their physical launch to get our hands on them.
